The Tampa Bay area, home to beautiful Clearwater Beach, is about 500 miles south east of Pensacola and NOT in any imminent threat of oil reaching our beaches.
Clearwater Beach is an island connected to the mainland of Clearwater by a toll-free, four-lane causeway that stretches almost two miles across the Intercoastal Waterway. Many fine, homes, apartments and condominiums (such as Harborview Grande) offer an idyllic semi-tropical island accommodations to permanent home owners, visitors and second home owners. Its award winning beaches, the nightly festivities at Pier 60 and dynamic marina are the foundation that makes Clearwater beach such a desired place to live and visit!
HISTORY
The area of Clearwater was first explored by Spanish explores in 1528. However, the area remained a stronghold of the Seminole Indians until the Seminole Wars of 1835-42. Their name of
"Pocotopaug" meaning "clear water," for the many springs of clear, fresh water that bubbled along the shore and even below the waterline at low tide.
After the wars ended, settlers were allowed to homestead land under the Armed Occupation Act and the first land grant was issue in 1842. The early settlement of Clear Water Harbor was established in 1897. In 1906, when Pinellas County was created, Clear Water became one word and Harbor was dropped.
